Barnes Rural Water District Reservoir Expansion

Barnes Rural Water District Reservoir Expansion

Valley City, North Dakota

Interstate Engineering was commissioned to lead the design and construction engineering for a critical reservoir expansion project for the Barnes Rural Water District (BRWD) near Valley City. This project addressed the growing demands on the water district’s infrastructure, which recent developments had stressed.

Interstate Engineering has a long-standing relationship with BRWD, having previously collaborated on numerous system improvements. The need for this particular expansion arose following a significant project completed in 2018, which increased treatment capacity and added over 300 new users to the system. However, while this project successfully enhanced water treatment capabilities, it did not address the necessary expansion of pump station storage capacity. As a result, the existing reservoir storage system struggled to meet the heightened demand, particularly in the southern half of the water distribution system.

To resolve this challenge, Interstate Engineering thoroughly assessed the system’s current needs and the additional demand resulting from the 2018 expansion. Our solution focused on enhancing the storage capacity at four critical reservoir sites: Reservoirs C, D, F, and G. The project involved adding 100,000 gallons of storage to each site, effectively doubling their capacity. This was achieved by connecting the new storage tanks to the existing infrastructure, which included 100,000-gallon and 50,000-gallon reservoirs, and replacing outdated interior piping to improve overall system efficiency.

The additional storage capacity provided by this expansion ensured that the BRWD could maintain a reliable water supply for its customers, even during periods of peak demand. By addressing the specific needs of the southern half of the system, this project resolved immediate issues and positioned the district for future growth and demand increases.

Interstate Engineering was responsible for the entire preliminary engineering phase of the project. This included preparing a comprehensive project concept report and developing detailed plans, ensuring that the project was well-defined and ready for execution.

Through our continued partnership with BRWD, Interstate Engineering has once again demonstrated our commitment to providing innovative and practical solutions to the challenges faced by rural water districts. The successful completion of this reservoir expansion project underscores our ability to deliver projects that enhance infrastructure reliability and support community growth.
