Interstate Engineering has provided municipal engineering services to the City of Columbus since 2006.
The first project undertaken was developing a water distribution system hydraulic model used to analyze the impacts of new development, identify weaknesses in the distribution system, and serve as a planning tool for main replacement or up-sizing.
In 2006, a subdivision designed to hold over 200 units was proposed east of 9th Avenue. Concerned about how this would affect the city’s water and sewer system, the City of Columbus asked Interstate Engineering to prepare a water and wastewater system impact study. The study identified system shortcomings in providing sufficient water to the area, especially regarding fire protection. The study indicated that the wastewater lagoons would reach maximum capacity if the subdivision reached full planned build-out. The distribution system model and study also illustrated the need for an additional supply well, regardless of subdivision development.
With the identification of the necessity of an additional well, the Heritage Well project began to develop. After completion, the well delivers an extra 360 gallons per minute of water to the city. A sand separation system was included in the well house, allowing the removal of sand from the well water before the water enters the distribution system. By adding this, the city reduced potential maintenance problems with water meters. A liquid chlorine disinfection system was also included in the design. The Heritage Well was the first project in the state to go to construction utilizing the SRF stimulus grant/loan.
In 2009, Interstate Engineering provided design and construction administration services for the interior and exterior of the city’s one million-gallon steel water storage tank, along with drainage improvements around the tank and new chain link fencing.
Over subsequent years, Interstate Engineering has designed and completed construction administration services for water and sewer main expansion and replacement projects, including a recent cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) project to renovate over 20,000 feet of sanitary sewer main. This project provided significant savings compared to the costs expected with open trench rehabilitation and replacement. We have also provided services for improving the storm drainage system in the city, along with street reconstruction projects and walking paths.
Interstate Engineering continues to assist the City of Columbus in day-to-day operations concerning engineering, planning, and financing major projects.
