Columbia Road Overpass

Columbia Road Overpass

Grand Forks, North Dakota

Ten miles of channel were reconstructed, ten major road crossings were replaced, and hundreds of field inlet culverts were replaced or installed.

Since 2006, Interstate Engineering has assisted the City of Grand Forks in inspecting and maintaining the Columbia Road Overpass. The Columbia Road Overpass is a 1,420-foot long, ten-span bridge with four steel welded plate girders and a concrete deck. The bridge sits on two concrete abutments and nine concrete piers.

Interstate Engineering has provided five different on-site reviews on the overpass, including the finger joints on each end of the bridge, the concrete deck overlay, the interiors and exteriors of the steel beams, abutment and pier POT bearings, slope pavements, pedestrian canopy, and bridge railings.

Over the years, rehabilitation projects completed by Interstate Engineering on the Columbia Road Overpass include replacing or resetting the finger joints on both ends of the bridge, replacing the steel joint cover plates on the sidewalk, and replacing one POT bearing on the south abutment. Rehabilitation also required lifting the bridge beam to remove and replace the bearing and cutting and patching the concrete deck overlay where it had delaminated from the structural deck. All these projects involved installing traffic control devices to move traffic to one side of the bridge, leaving the bridge open to one traffic lane in each direction. These projects also required coordination with the University of North Dakota and BNSF Railroad.

Interstate Engineering provided design services as part of these projects, including preparing plans, specifications, and construction estimates; bidding assistance during the bidding process; construction engineering services coordinating with contractors and providing observation to ensure work was completed following the plans and specifications.
