Parks & Sidewalks ComprehenSIVE Plan
Columbus, Montana
The City of Columbus commissioned a comprehensive development initiative focused on Itch-Kep-Pe Park, the largest recreational area along the scenic Yellowstone River. The project involved creating a detailed map of the park, recommending management strategies, and proposing safety upgrades for the campground facilities. The city’s sidewalk infrastructure was also thoroughly assessed to support future improvements.
The city faced several challenges that hindered its potential for increased tourism. The existing park and campground facilities required enhancements to attract more visitors. At the same time, the sidewalks throughout the city needed careful inventory and analysis to develop a strategic plan to fund and maintain the sidewalk network.
The planning team devised a comprehensive parks and sidewalk plan to address these challenges. This initiative was partially funded through a successful grant application written by Interstate Engineering. The finalized plan was presented to the town council, providing actionable recommendations for improvements and enhancements. As a result, the City of Columbus now possesses a clear, actionable plan for the ongoing maintenance and development of the park and sidewalk systems, supporting its goal of increasing tourism.
The project, completed in August 2022, incurred a total design cost of $40,000, consisting of $30,000 from a grant and a $10,000 local contribution. The funding was secured through the Community Development Block Grant.
This strategic planning effort will enhance the city’s recreational offerings, foster community engagement, and support future development initiatives.
