Stutsman County Bridge No. 47-135-29.0
Stutsman County, North Dakota
Interstate Engineering provided design and construction engineering services for the rehabilitation of Stutsman County Bridge No. 47-135-29.0.
The existing bridge was a 61-foot single-span adjacent precast concrete box beam bridge deemed functionally obsolete due to its clear roadway width. Stutsman County initially hired Interstate Engineering to evaluate the options for widening the bridge to meet current standards.
Alternatives were evaluated, including the complete replacement of the bridge, replacing the entire superstructure, and adding a concrete deck to the existing concrete box beams. The most economical option was rehabilitation and replacing the complete superstructure due to the deterioration of the tops of the box beams. The option chosen included removing the existing box beams, modifying the existing abutments to accommodate the wider deck, installing new adjacent box beams, pouring a new concrete deck, and installing new crash-tested steel bridge railings.
Interstate Engineering provided preliminary engineering reports throughout the design and construction process to assist the owner in making decisions. Design services prepared plans, specifications, and construction estimates and provided bidding assistance. During the construction phase, Interstate Engineering provided on-site observation for the project, coordinated with the contractor, and provided observation for conformance with the plans, specifications, and project documentation.
