Thundering Buffalo Wellness CENTER
Poplar, Montana
The Fort Peck Tribes hired Interstate Engineering in 2019 to design the facility’s utilities, drainage, parking lot, heavy-traffic pathway, drop-off area, ADA-accessible sidewalks, and landscaping and help ensure adequate sewer and water capacities.
The Thundering Buffalo Wellness Center was a project that the Fort Peck Tribes wanted to take on since as early as 2010. They had previously worked with other consulting teams and could not push the project through.
In 2019, the Fort Peck Tribes Development Committee commissioned Interstate Engineering and JGA Architects to take on the project. During design, the Fort Peck Tribe’s Health Promotion, Disease Prevention (HPDP) department was heavily involved in the facility’s layout, from its amenities to the small details of each provider’s care room.
Interstate Engineering worked with HPDP to design the parking lot, which included a heavy traffic pathway, drop-off area, and landscaping. The team provided documentation for Environmental Assessments and ALTA Documents and the complete design of the utilities, drainage, parking lot, and ADA-accessible sidewalks. Interstate Engineering assisted the Fort Peck Tribes by working with the City of Poplar to help ensure adequate sewer and water capacities were in place for this large facility. During construction, the team attended weekly meetings and site visits to ensure the civil portion of the project was constructed following the project plans and specifications.
The Wellness Center was opened to the public in the fall of 2021. It allows people of all ages to meet with physicians and other healthcare professionals and provides general fitness and health-related classes.
