Richland County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan
Richland County, North Dakota
The Interstate Engineering planning department provided an action plan and clear prioritization of hazard mitigation strategies broken down by individual communities.
Interstate Engineering completed the Richland County Hazard Mitigation Plan in 2022. This project updated a 2008 multi-hazard mitigation plan for Richland County, North Dakota communities. The previous plan expired in 2015, leaving the county’s communities at risk of being ineligible for disaster mitigation assistance. We worked with each community in the county to review their capabilities to respond to a natural disaster and conducted a risk assessment for each community and the county as a whole for each hazard. We utilized a risk classification matrix to evaluate hazards in each community and develop mitigation strategies appropriate to the community’s risk level for each hazard. These mitigation strategies ranged from policy implementation to practical steps for communities, such as updating all EMS training certifications.
The planning process involved coordination and communication with each community. We gathered historical data and information from individuals who know their community best to supplement the available state and national data. This complete picture allowed planners to consider those learned experiences and appropriately plan for future hazard mitigation.
Ultimately, Interstate Engineering provided Richland County with an action plan and clear prioritization of mitigation strategies. This allowed for an easy understanding of a complicated planning process.
